NewsCow is a digital-only, free news outlet for Cowley County, Kansas that thrives by keeping operational costs at a minimum and staff to a core few people. Newscow grew to have the largest readership of any news outlet in the area outside of the Wichita Metro area. We developed a partnership with the local radio station to supply the news on-air and eventually, NewsCow has become fully intertwined with the radio station. When I left NewsCow we were seeing 75% year to year growth. NewsCow now provides news to three counties in southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma.

These are a few highlights from my time with NewsCow.

I developed the product concept for a digital-only news agency in Cowley County with a group from local print media. The branding and site design were based on conversations with my partners. We realized the site could be commoditized and packaged for reuse and the site has since grown to encompass two neighboring counties.

Interactive Advertising

I worked with advertisers to generate the creative assets and strategies for advertising with NewsCow. Many of our clients were not familiar with online advertising and required training in what to expect and how to capitalize on Web traffic from our site. I generated interactive advertisements to further engage readers.

Three Counties in Two States

Upon returning to NewsCow, I led the expansion into Oklahoma with KayNewsCow.com. The site was implemented using an entirely custom, fully responsive, WordPress theme. The site is maintained by a single reporter who is now more widely read than her former employee, the only major news outlet in Ponca City, OK (pop. 24,000).
